Instantaneous

Our society today
Is filled with instant
It’s not just coffee anymore
Information is at
Our very fingertips
Just a twitch and we
Get answers with
No effort at all
What is left to seek
In this society
Where we gorge on trending
And binge our favorite things
Don’t get me wrong
It’s not all bad
But, take the warning
That we can’t forget
To have patience
To have wonder
To learn first hand
And not rely on a device
To learn everything
To get out and feel
What a flower smells like
To stay up all night
Just talking
And to look at the stars
And feel really small
And wonder what the
Wide universe holds
And how did life begin at all
Was it as they teach in school
Or what I believe
That we were made, designed
Out of love
And none of that
Was instantaneous

Focus

My ability to focus
Is a fickle thing
Gone when I seek it
There when I don’t need it
And greatly improve by sleep

When life goes crazy
Like it always does
That is the time I must
Keep my focus on God
Or things really go wrong

When my focus
It falls off God
And I start to sink
Into the mire
That gobbles me up

And then my God
Reached out
And rescues me again
Set me on sure ground
Keeps my focus on Him

With trembling and shaking
I clutch God’s hand
He holds me firm
And sets my focus
Back on God

Integrity

Don’t compromise who you are
Don’t bend to pressure
From human values
Stand firm on who you are
Though you tremble
And your hands shake
Don’t back down
From doing what is right
Take a stand for things
That need to be fixed
Though you’re afraid,
Roll up your sleeves
And do what you know
Needs to be done
Do it with love
And sure integrity

Focus

My ability to focus
Is a fickle thing
Gone when I seek it
There when I don’t need it
And greatly improve by sleep

When life goes crazy
Like it always does
That is the time I must
Keep my focus on God
Or things really go wrong

When my focus
It falls off God
And I start to sink
Into the mire
That gobbles me up

And then my God
Reached out
And rescues me again
Set me on sure ground
Keeps my focus on Him

With trembling and shaking
I clutch God’s hand
He holds me firm
And sets my focus
Back on God

One Focus

There is only one thing
Christianity is really about
That is Jesus Christ
He is the focus
He is the One who
Came down from Heaven
And He chose to spend
His limited time
In human skin
Reaching out to those
Society cast out
The ones called misfits
Who were considered less
And that is the Jesus
We need to focus on
That is the Jesus
Who leads us
Who we worship
That is Who we follow
And keeping our focus on Jesus
Will keep us from stumbling
It’s possible to go
To all the hard places
When we only focus
Only on Jesus

Grief, Yet Joy

The phone call comes
Jesus has taken her home
And grief crashes over me
Like an ocean wave
My tears flow and yet
There is joy in the end
There is praise inside me
Jesus hold me close
She’s with you now
In her true home
Though my eyes
Hurt from crying
And my heart is heavy
There is joy for her
She is home
Wrapped in Jesus’ arms
Crowned and called daughter
I’m broken, grief-cracked
And yet there is still joy
Joy for her
To be with God
In the place
That is our true home

The part that isn’t a poem:

About an hour ago, my dad called. My grandma passed away in the night. God called her home.
