Whispers

Whispers follow us
Words that define us
Settle in our minds
Like unseen cobwebs
Filling the dark corners
Growing thicker, stronger
Until the dangle in ropes
Catching us unaware
Ensnaring us when
We least expect it
These whispered labels
Be they right or wrong
Cling to us as a web to a fly
And when the spiders
Descend their webs
With ravenous clicking jaws
They feast upon what
Is caught up and struggling
Until they consume their victim
And move on to the next
What starts as a whisper grows
These labels, slurs,
They entangle and destroy
Be careful what you say
And shine light on
The whispers in your own mind
Clean them out before
The webs hold you
And the spider descends
