Thorns grow up,
Anxieties choking us
Fear that comes
From things in the world
That want to be first
In our lives
Ahead of what
Really matters
In between us
And the God Who
Conquered sin and death
Out of love for us
On the chance we
Would see Who He is
And take the gift
Of His perfect love
His mercy and grace
Things these thorns
Tear at, trying to
Rend them away
From each of us
God is bigger
Than the thorns

A Life Given

A live given in service
And in protection of those
Who stayed home
That life has made
The ultimate sacrifice
Paid the price for
The freedoms of those
Of us left behind
Protected by the lives
Of those who fight
Those who serve
Knowing they may
Not ever come back home.
Thank you for all
That you have given
Thank you to those
Who offered your lives
Thank you to those
Who gave your lives
Thank you isn’t enough
To begin to express
Gratitude for all that
They have given
For those lives
Both given and reshaped
By the act of service

Small Hands

Small hands lifted up
All they want is a hug
They understand
How to love
Don’t need to be taught
That they need us
How is it we forget
The way we used to be
Leaning on one another
Innocent, just saying
“Come play with me”
Is how we make friends
An easy laugh
A smile on a precious face
What a gift
A child’s love is
Small hands lifted up
Let that be a symbol
Of how we should trust
How we should love
Like a child

Turn It

Lord, take my crappy attitude
And grow flowers in it.
Take my sullenness and
Change it to joy
Lord, correct my sense
Of impending doom to
Become a knowledge of the
Present overabundence
Of all Your blessings
God, turn the pressure
I put on myself and redirect it
Into sincere praise
For Who You are
For how You love me
For all You have done
And continue to do in me
Turn it all to praise
That brings You glory
Refocus me only on You

State of Change

The level of change piles up
When it overwhelms and
Gets to be way too much
The need to have something familiar
Is so deep and it’s insane
And completely indescribable
It’s shaking and breaking
It’s shattering, but it’s still good
It’s so hard and yet,
Change is a constant
And inevitable
In the constant state
Of a turning, changing world,
In my life, there is ever
One constant that doesn’t
Ever change and He is Jesus
He is God, Who is always
And forever with me
Loving me and guiding
Every step I take

Preexisting Condition

I’ve lied, I’ve been rude
Meanness has totally
Been a thing with me
I’ve been hurt, shattered
Utterly broken and felt
Not good enough
For anyone to love
I’ve been sure I was useless
Been lonely, wished
Desperately for someone
Anyone to just see me
It’s the state of existence
Our existing condition
Of isolating loneliness
A preexisting condition that
Most of humanity knows
What I want to tell you
Is that there is a place to go
Accepting all preexisting
Condition no matter what it is
You and me, we are welcome
In the open arms of Jesus
There’s no referral needed
He just loves us as we are
Tired and feeling broken
He takes us and meets us
In the place we live
House calls are totally His thing
There’s no denial
For any reason
To anyone who invites
Him in to their life
No matter what
No matter where or when
Jesus loves through every single
Preexisting condition
